Cross?linked polymers increase nutrient sorption in degraded soils

چکیده
Cross-linked polymer hydrogels, polyacrylamide co-polymer (XPAM) or polyacrylate (XPAA) offer potential solutions for soil degradation, declines in resilience, and poor productivity marginal soils. However, little is known about their long-term effect on nutrient availability. This 9-yr, irrigated, outdoor, cropped pot study evaluated a single, one-time addition of XPAM XPAA at 0.25 0.5% dry wt. (5.6 11.2 Mg ha–1) degraded (artificially eroded) soil. Controls included an unamended unamended, non-degraded (i.e., topsoil). We measured nutrients leachate water each year, the first 5 yr, crop yields uptake. Both hydrogels increased average pH electrical conductivity (EC), extractable K, Na, total organic carbon (TOC), decreased relative to control. Unlike XPAM, produced greater increase Fe, Zn, Mn, Cu, Olsen P, inorganic (TIC). Neither hydrogel affected but K Zn Na uptake crops compared controls. Relative control, both cumulative Ca, Mg, S leaching mass losses mean EC leachate. NO3–N, NH4–N The hydrogels’ effects persisted ?7 differing as function quantity counterions stability gel structure after placement.

Elastic Properties of Crosslinked Polymers
At first a survey is given on the thermodynamics of rubber-elasticity and the results of the statistical theory of molecular networks. Experimental data of torsional vibrations, stress—strain measurements (simple extension and uniaxial compression) and photoelastic properties in dependence of temperature are reported. The measurements have been carried out on dry and swollen crosslinked polymer...
متن کاملMesofaunal Recolonisation of Degraded Soils
JENNIFER KATE WILLIAMS The degradation of soil quality due to anthropogenic causes is globally important, both in terms of ecosystem services and ecological biodiversity. Soil quality reduction is stated to be detrimental for population densities and species diversity of soil invertebrates, including the mesofauna (Acari and Collembola). Within the soil food web, mesofauna occupy several trophi...
متن کاملPhosphorus Sorption by Gravels in Lateritic Soils
t The effect of sesquioxidic i i ic gravels (>2 mm size fraction) on phosphorus sorption by two gravelly lateritic soils was investigated by phosphorus sorption experiments, X-ray diffraction, ti , autoradiography and electron microscopy. In one soil the abundance and size of gravels l decreased downslope. As the gravel content of both soils increased (13-61%), ), the proportion of large (>8 mm...
متن کاملSorption and predicted mobility of herbicides in Baltic soils.
This study was undertaken to determine sorption coefficients of eight herbicides (alachlor, amitrole, atrazine, simazine, dicamba, imazamox, imazethapyr, and pendimethalin) to seven agricultural soils from sites throughout Lithuania. The measured sorption coefficients were used to predict the susceptibility of these herbicides to leach to groundwater. Soil-water partitioning coefficients were m...
متن کاملSequential sorption of lead and cadmium in three tropical soils.
It is important to examine mechanisms of Pb and Cd sorption in soils to understand their bioavailability. The ability of three tropical soils to retain Pb, Cd, and Ca was evaluated. The objectives of this study were to (1) determine the extent to which soil sorption sites are metal specific, (2) investigate the nature of reactions between metals and soil surfaces, and (3) identify how metals co...
